Steak and mushrooms are one of those ultimate winning combinations. Savory, umami, meaty flavors are unstoppable, especially when served with a decadent, creamy sauce over pasta. It's a classic comfort food.

Now, you’re probably thinking, there’s no way a dish like this is diet friendly. Think again! Thanks to It’s Skinny, you can have this rich, creamy, satisfying dish without a second thought! It’s keto-friendly and suitable for any low-carb diet plan! This hearty meal is full of great flavor—it's bound to be your new favorite dinner.

Steakhouse Delight

Mushrooms and steak are a classic pairing. Maybe not quite up there with peanut butter and jelly, but pretty darn close. Thanks to their similar savory flavor profiles and satisfying texture, mushrooms have been partnered with beef in dishes for many years.

Mushrooms feature an earthy, almost meaty taste. The unique flavor is called umami, which can be found in soy, miso, and mushrooms. Umami is a fifth basic taste—alongside sour, bitter, salty, and sweet. It's this rich flavor that complements steak so well.

As far as the texture sensations are concerned, mushrooms are tender yet chewy. It contrasts nicely with the succulence of steak. It creates a complex layering that really rounds out the dish. Both ingredients are highly versatile and cooked in many different ways (hence, the reason they're so often partnered).

The combination doesn’t necessarily have a documented origin, but it’s been enjoyed for centuries. Both beef and mushrooms are staples in many cuisines around the world. The pairing is a natural answer to the culinary principle of pairing protein with a flavorful vegetable side to enhance the flavor.

Throughout Europe, particularly in France, mushrooms are paired with many types of meats, including steak in numerous classic dishes. Steak au Poivre (aka steak in pepper sauce) often includes mushrooms. In British cuisine, steak and mushrooms are combined in pasties and pies.

Beef and mushrooms are a combination in many global cuisines. Think of steakhouses that serve sauteed mushrooms on the side, beef and noodle dishes in Asian cuisine, or creamy beef and mushroom stroganoff in Russia. Of course, there's also the classic Philly cheesesteak, which combines mushrooms and slices of steak.

Today, we've paired fresh mushrooms, sirloin steak, fresh thyme, and a creamy sauce. We used sour cream instead of heavy cream to add some more flavor—think of it as a low carb beef stroganoff or a keto stroganoff. It's perfect over pasta (and guilt-free with It's Skinny).

No Carb Fettuccine?

We know it's hard to believe you can have fettuccine noodles in cream sauce (with steak! And mushrooms!) and still lose weight, but get ready! It's true!

You can have It’s Skinny Pasta with zero net carbs and only 9 calories per pack. You get all the taste and texture of your favorite noodles without the carb overload. There are no worries about shifting your body out of ketosis if you’re on keto, either.

It’s Skinny Pasta is keto-friendly, low-carb, gluten-free, vegan, kosher, and delicious! It’s the perfect answer for anyone who doesn’t want to feel deprived or punished just because you’re watching what you eat. In fact, It’s Skinny has such amazing stats that you can have a serving with a little bit of butter and salt, and not even break your intermittent fast!

How do we do it? How do we make noodles that are so much like traditional pasta without any of the hangups? We use a very special ingredient called konjac root. Konjac is a little like a radish or a turnip—it’s a root vegetable.

For many years, konjac has been a staple in Asian cuisines, used as both food and medicine. Only in the last decade or two has konjac been enjoyed in the United States. This fibrous veggie makes unbelievably great keto pasta. Unlike zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash, and cauliflower rice, It's Skinny shirataki noodles won't overpower or water down your recipe either.

Like traditional pasta, It's Skinny takes on the flavors of the other ingredients in your dish. You can pair our pasta with your favorite sauce, protein, cheese, and other toppings, and you'll feel full and satisfied (but never weighed down). Konjac has a special type of fiber known as glucomannan. This fiber is especially great at keeping your blood sugar levels steady—for sustained satisfaction.

Oh, and by the way, did we mention that It's Skinny comes in FOUR amazing styles? All four shapes are available in both traditional and organic formulas. It's a food you can feel good about enjoying. Choose from these fantastic options:

Are you the indecisive type? No worries! We’ve got you! Try a variety pack. You’ll get all the varieties in one convenient shipment. You can try them and test them out to pick a fave.

Making Creamy Steak and Mushroom Pasta Your Way

Are you a culinary artist? Or maybe you enjoy experimenting in the kitchen? Don’t let us hold you back! We encourage kitchen play and fun! You can customize any of our recipes—swap out the veggies, add a different protein, or play around with the noodle shapes. When you cook with It’s Skinny, you have a world of pastabilities! Here are just a few ideas.

Can I use any style of It’s Skinny with this recipe?

Absolutely! All the styles of It's Skinny are completely interchangeable in any of our recipes (even Rice—who are we to judge?!) If there's a noodle shape that floats your boat, go for it! Steak and mushrooms are hearty, so fettuccine is a nice, thick noodle that holds up well, but you could try it with other varieties, too.

Using your “noodle,” Spaghetti is the next most logical choice for creamy steak and mushrooms. The keto spaghetti noodles are a little less wide than Fettuccine but still hold their own quite well. If you prefer a more delicate pasta, Angel Hair is a great choice, too. Now…as we said, if your heart is set on Rice, we say go for it! Break the rules!

What vegetables would go with steak and mushrooms?

Almost any and every veggie tastes great with creamy sauce. Most go well with mushrooms and steak, too. If you're trying to get more vegetables into your meals, this creamy pasta dish is the perfect opportunity. The simple ingredients are great.

A few ideas that go well with this recipe? Broccoli, spinach, and bell peppers are especially well-suited to the other flavors here. Red bell peppers are a little sweeter, but green ones are perfectly delicious, too. Any type of onion—red onion, yellow onion, even shallot would be great. Add other fresh herbs like rosemary, fresh parsley, or sage.

Can I skip the steak?

The juicy steak pairs well with the mushrooms and sour cream sauce, bringing the dish together. However, if you'd like to omit the steak, you could use sliced portobello mushrooms for a meaty-tasting vegetarian swap (be sure to switch the chicken broth to vegetable).

You could also use chicken breast in place of steak or any other protein that you prefer. Beef has plenty of iron and other essential minerals like zinc and selenium. If you don't have any steak on hand, you could also use another cut of beef here—ground beef would still be delicious, but be sure to brown the meat thoroughly.
